And now you can get a taste right here in Qatar, as Cova has just opened inside Parisian department store Printemps, which is part of the Doha Oasis complex in Mushaireb. The historic pasticceria’s original branch quickly became the favoured meeting place of the cream of society, and was even frequented by world-famous artists such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. Since then, it has gone on to expand into locations in cities like Paris and Monte Carlo, and the new eatery can now be found on the ultra-chic Fashion Boulevard on the second Áoor of Printemps. Decked out with dark wood panelling, crystal chandeliers and marble Ànishing, the new space is true to its roots, and we think it would get the seal of approval from the aristocracy who once passed through its doors. The Àrst thing you’ll be greeted by is the confetteria counter, a display teeming with moreish pastries, signature cakes and tasty sandwiches. Open daily between 9.30am and 10pm, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at Cova Doha. There’s something for every palate, including some very decadent savoury options. Italian favourites are available, such as a pumpkin gnocchi with taleggio cheese, Milanese saffron risotto and Milanese veal cutlet with rocket salad and cherry tomatoes. You can also dig into lighter dishes, such as signature Cova chicken caesar salad, seasonal grilled vegetables, buffalo mozzarella from campania and basil or signature veal in tuna sauce. For high tea fans, you can order a stand of sweet and bite-sized pastries, served with an extensive tea menu, from 3pm daily. Savoury options include homemade tartines, scones and mini sandwiches, while sweet tooths will love the mini fruit tarts, butter biscuits and mini sacher cake. If Cova’s latest opening is anything like the original, we think you’ll be raising your pinky Àngers alongside Doha’s very own crème de la crème. Milan might be nearly 3,000 miles away, but you won’t have to travel that far to get your Àx of exceptional Italian pastries thanks to the opening of Cova Doha. O Open daily 9.30am-10pm. And now desert explorers need to add a new spot to their to-visit list, as a stunning new installation by Olafur Eliasson has just been unveiled in the desert outside Al Zubarah. Shadows travelling on the sea of the day (2022) is comprised of 20 mirrored circular shelters, three single rings, and two double rings, with the ten shelters at the centre forming a pentagram. The patterns which inspired the piece were recently discovered by mathematicians in the West, but may have informed some of the sophisticated designs found in Islamic cultures since medieval times. New desert installation unveiled Of the piece, Eliasson said, “Shadows travelling on the sea of the day (2022) is an invitation to resync with the planet. It is a celebration of everything being in and moving through the desert site north of Doha at the time of your visit – animals, plants, and human beings; stories, traditions, and cultural artefacts; wind, sunlight, air, and shimmering heat. “On arriving at the installation, looking up at the mirrored undersides, you will come to realise that you are, in fact, looking down – at the earth and at yourself. Above and below, sand envelops you, together with anyone else sharing the space. It is a kind of reality check of your connectedness to the ground.” Two other artworks – Simone Fattal’s Maqam I, Maqam II, Maqam III (2021) and Ernesto Neto’s immersive installation Slug Turtle, TemplEarth (2022) – have also been installed near Al Zubarah and the abandoned village Ain Mohammed. The installations are meant to highlight the importance of Qatar’s nearby heritage sites. Al Zubarah was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. “It’s an invitation to resync with the planet” City lifeNext >
