That’s the question we fi nd ourselves asking as we stand on a precipice, looking out onto the unknown, seeking to understand an elusive future. The challenges posed by Covid-19 – its threat to our routines, our freedoms, our very existence – have forced us to reconsider where we are and where we are going. A lengthy global lockdown has facilitated an extensive and unprecedented period of contemplation and self-refl ection. Black Lives Matter, a powerful movement that has gained signifi cant traction and encouraged an urgent conversation around systemic racism, has confronted us with real, and uncomfortable, truths. We have become more aware than ever before of the disparities that exist – not just globally, but within our own communities – and despite not knowing where this strange new world is headed, we are increasingly looking to redress imbalances; to channel that contemplation so that it becomes a catalyst for change. The fashion industry is not exempt from this self-refl ection and has a vital role to play in carving out and committing to a new type of future. As the stagnancy of the status quo moves towards considered change and collective momentum, we must use this opportunity to reset and address what Caroline Rush, Executive Chair of the British Fashion Council, calls “that concept of unconscious bias.” (The Future of Fashion, page 32). Designers too must make their voices heard. “I feel we have to be more radical, more sharp — no compromises,” Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli tells Bazaar. “We have to follow our intuition and ideas… because you can deliver a beautiful dress but you can also deliver values.” (Through Fashion’s Eyes, page 26). To return to the question at the heart of this issue – Where to now? The answer lies, not in the second- guessing of what we may encounter ahead but in an appreciation of what we want that destination to look like and in our ability to begin shaping it.
